Days that matter

Today is Rachel’s birthday.

She’s heading out the door to church with the boys and I’m staying at home…. supposedly to do some house work and also because it’s only been a week since chemo and I’m *cough*cough* not feeling too good *cough*cough*.

Truth be told the last 4 weeks I have been on a marathon planning crusade to organise a surprise party as well as a few other bits and pieces. Rachel is a very social creature, not like me at all in that regard, and thrives on the company of her friends. While a good number of them can’t be here for the surprise due to the fact they live in New Zealand, there’s enough people that love her on their way to make it worthwhile. She doesn’t know it yet but in 3 hours there’s going to be 25 adults and kids running around, playing on a cool little bouncy castle, eating fully catered food all served to them by wait staff, a selection of imported beers (don’t worry, I don’t drink) and of course, excellent New Zealand wines to toast the birthday girl.

I’ve got to go and organise the last few little things. In the meantime, here’s a video I made for Rachel as a birthday present. Kiwi people, keep an eye out for a special guest…. and some guy that calls himself ‘Wolverine’?

  1. That is a VERY touching BD video! Trust that she’ll cherish today :)

  2. That has to be the most romantic thing I’ve ever seen! Even though you guys are struggling/fighting the worst thing in the world, God IS glorified by your lives. I see it. I know others do. I know that isn’t a comfort – just a fact. Our prayers are often with you. May God bless you both.

  3. My prayer is that you two will celebrate together many more birthdays…in the meantime….keep this video close by watch it thousands of times when your bickering or feeling lousy…it’s the one loop hole Satan cannot penetrate your true love for one another …God bless

  75. Dear Kristian, this is just beautiful! My thoughts are with you and your family. God bless!

  76. What a beautiful and loving soul you have… you’re bringing the light in to others, and also yourself, may you be healed by it xxxx

  77. Hi Kristian.
I lost my mother 2 years ago to the same cancer. She too ignored her bowel symptoms – mainly cause she was too embarrassed to have a doctor “poke around up there”. It went to her liver, however being in both nodes and the size of the cancer, she could not get it removed.

Every day counts, keeping your spirits high and making yourself get up and about every day helps. My mum treated every day the same way as before she got sick, she even wore her chemo bag to work, against the advise from her doctor…. she wasn’t going to let it beat her.

It finally did beat her, but I’ll forever have the memory of someone who had the ultimate battle for life, and I’ll cherish every second I had with her.

In the 2 years since she’s been gone, we’ve found out me 31yr old brother, now has cancer also, so we begin the battle again….

Fight for yourself, fight for your beautiful wife, and fight for those darling boys….. whatever happens, will happen, but you’ll all know that no one gave up, and so long as there is love in your life, then how bad can it be?! Good luck and and keep smiling!!

  78. Thank you for sharing this message and allowing us into your family life with such a wonderful expression of love. I wish all the above words of comfort could heal and the combined positive thoughts bring positive outcomes for you. Best wishes, Michelle.

  97. Hi Kristian,
A very moving video and as a fellow cancer sufferer, too close to home. I was diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma (cancer of the bile ducts) two years and three months ago at the age of 47 (I have a wife and three kids) – it’s been quite a battle. Had a left hepatectomy and bile duct reconstruction and have had a total of about 18 months of chemo. All the while my CEA 19-9 has slowly trended back up,and now about 5 lesions are visible in the scans of my liver. The window of opportunity for surgical removal passed but they have tried a new treatment on me – SIRT. I would imagine this is a possibility for you as it is most commonly used on liver secondaries. Do you have too many or has it spread further? Google it for more info – it was pioneered here in Perth. I did it 7 weeks ago – I have a scan in about 4 weeks to see if it has been beneficial. Very few side effects.
The mental battle is the hardest one – you just have to get on with life. Good luck and best wishes to you and your family – you are not alone. Stay strong.

  98. Dear Kristian
I have spent 35 years working in health and your personal story has resonated with me like no other. I find it hard to write this amongst the tears.
Your strength and honesty is so amazing and a tribute to whoever influenced you to become the person you are.
    Mary (NZ)

  99. Dear Kristian,
I would like to share a little sometihng with you, on the down days I hope this will bring you back up

Your a kind man with a kind heart and I too pray that you win this battle and you and your wife grow old together, watching your children have children and enjoy every day.

  100. My beautiful partner made it through a tough couple of years with cancer. Your message to your wife made me cry for the scare that noone should have to go through. I love my partner and will love her for the rest of our lives.

  101. I’m sorry but my english is very bad… But I want you to say that you will live forever for your familly and for those like me who had been touch by your video… Take care…

  102. Hello Kristian,
An incredibly moving video. I am in almost identical circumstances to Rachel. My husband is 35 with metastic colorectal cancer which has spread to his liver. We have three kids, 6, 3 and 1. It is an absolutely heartwrenching experience as you well know. I firmly believe that cancer is not all bad though, through the darkness there is most definitely moments of pure light and joy that would not be otherwise seen. My love to your wife and your kids – and yourself of course.
    Anna

  103. thoughts and prayers are with you and your incredibly beautiful wife.

  106. Hi there,

I just wanted to leave a note to say how incredible this is to watch…. Rachel appears to share the same birthday as I do, and this year was particularly tragic as I lost my Father to the same cripling disease that you are having to deal with, only 4 months ago. You look and need to stay strong. Rachel is very lucky to have you and you her :) I hope there are many many more special occasions that you will be able to share as a Family, because no matter how old, or how much time you have with each other, it is never ever enough.

Thank you for sharing this, it is so inspiring to watch despite the tears.

    Melissa (NZ)

  117. This video is magical & has had me thinking about your situation ever since viewing it. Though I have not had cancer, I have had some other injuries that have led me in the direction of hololistic care & with success. You are clearly a very spiritual person & faith in the divine God is a large part of the battle. If you have not already, I invite you to look into the energetic side of disease to compliment your other treatments. I have recently finished a book by Caroline Myss “Anatomy of the Spirit” which discusses the similarity between Christian, Judaism & Hindu spiritual healing. I think it is a great intro into learning about the spiritual side of disease & injury & may guide you to different treatment options. Also, check out Jean-Pierre Barral, D.O. & his alternative medicine insitute (www.barralinstitute.com) which suggests that negative/toxic energy stores wihtin the organs & leads to illness. Alternative therapies have also saved peoples lives.

Best of luck to you & your family in your journey

So many people go through life and don’t really appreciate what they’ve got, but I think it’s so important to make the most of every single day, regardless of whether or not you have cancer. I’ll be thinking of you and your family, I hope Rachel’s birthday went well =)

  123. Please don’t give up. Please look at Tommy Johnson, Sr.’s story on how he is an 11 year cancer survivor after his doctor’s told him there wasn’t any hope.

  125. Kristian & Family-

My husband was diagnosed with cancer in August of 2009, 3 months before our wedding. His cancer is currently in remission but I know first hand exactly how hard these times are for you and I will keep you in my prayers. It is amazing to see people faced with such hardships are still able to count their blessings and celebrate the important things like love and a beautiful family. Your video is so touching and I am certain good things are in store for you all.

    Sincerely,
    Sarah (US)

Rachel i know what your feeling and as hard as it gets never give up and it gets harder before it gets easier. i will continue to follow your blog, your are truly beautiful people

  143. Your prayer chain just got so much larger. I’m in awe of the strength and faith you’ve shown during this Odyssey. The birthday tribute to your wife and all your blog posts have touched me in a way that can’t be defined. Stay strong, Kristian. Praying for you in California.

  145. Good on you Kris. You honour God, your parents, you wife and your children and you inspire the likes of me.

  146. HI kristian, Just wanted to make contact with you as I want to share with you what I did to recover from bone cancers in 2007 & it could make you feel a whole lot better real fast, you have a beautiful heart & a beautiful family & you deserve to get better fast!!!(I WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT OUR BODY’S ARE SMART & ABSOLUTELY KNOW HOW TO HEAL THEMSELVES they just need the right conditions to thrive!!!)in 07 & 08 I had two operations to remove tumours from my bones & then they returned the docs deemed me inoperable & as a last resort in 2009 sent me to the peter mc callum cancer institute in melbourne I was to undergo a chemical drug trial (with some pretty nasty side effects & it would make me sterile) as I was only 27 & had no kids I didn’t want that so I went looking for answers & I found them. Iv gradually improved & got the all clear in my scans 6 months ago. I took Dr hulda clarks 3 harmless common herbs (which kill the human fluke parasite – its the #1 thing present in all cancer patients & the herbs wipe out the parasites + viruses within 24 hrs its like natural chemo without any of the side effects ,these same herbs were once given at 6 monthly check ups to patients in the u.k by docs up until the 1940s but they stopped it & boom the cancer rates skyrocketed) the parasite is very common & sucks the life out of your immune system & allows cancer to flourish. once its gone then your body is no longer under attack & can start the repair & rebuild process (i did this repair & rebuild by drinking lots of live enzyme juice. Carrot, beetroot & wheatgrass mainly – 3 x a day + I also made sure I got enough pure water, undisturbed sleep & 10 mins of sunshine & a bit of lite exercise + I cut down on all nasties. cancer feeds off sugar (working as a plumber I was eating lots of take away food, coke & pies for lunch on the job site) so I had to wean myself off the crap & my taste buds adjusted quickly & I grew to love the juices & now im addicted to the wellbeing feeling I get when I down them…ITS A FACT CANCER CANT SURVIVE IN AN ALKALINE BODY & filling up with lots of juice makes your body alkaline & cancer shrivels up & dies…its not rocket science & its not a thing your doctor would probably tell you (mine didn’t tell me & they are not interested in how I fixed myself either) If you already know about these things that’s great !!! (but i feel its wrong not to share my information as It worked for me & I have the scans to prove it I just wish someone told me this stuff back in 2007 then i would not have big scars & bones full of bone cement) If you want to know more please drop me a note as I have of learnt lots of other stuff I can share with you but what I have told you so far I feel was key to my recovery ..my email – drumma@hotmail.com (also if you want to try the 3 herbs there are now organic aussie growers & you can get them at 100th of the price of you health food store I can give you the contacts (or i can send you some of mine free if you want to give it a go…i got it in bulk & have lots left so let me know … also the live enzyme juicer that i used is a twin gear that produces living nutrition (the domestic centrifugal juicers just don’t cut it they heat up the veg & kill the nutrition like cooking it) I use the angel juicer (they are not cheap but you can get them on ebay second hand from time to time – If you don’t have the $$$ I would be more than happy to send you mine for as long as you need it & your whole family can juice together everyday & be supper healthy….love to hear from you ,cheers & all the best Neil.

Kristian, I believe there is a cure for cancer. The chemo is all good and probably did its job, but try to give your body an infusion of life with raw food. Try the Hippocrates Institute in Florida. I thought it was an information worth spreading.
Good luck to you and your family! You did a wonderful thing with this video.

  170. Wonderful vid… you’re a beautiful couple and we could touch your genuine love for Rachel.

Fight fight fight everyday to beat the beast… hope you’ll have many other birthdays to celebrate together.

  225. Beautiful video.
My mother died from Cancer in March after a very brave journey. She was also a Christian. I find it really helps to remember that God’s purposes are eternal. He has a plan in all of this and He can be trusted. Be comforted by knowing that although you suffer now, you have the enormous privilege of revealing Christ in a very powerful way. I’ll pray for you and your family.

  226. You are what this world needs more of. You have what this world needs more of. You believe in what this world needs more of. You have just left in me what i need a little bit more of. Thankyou and may God bless you both

  227. That was one of the most beautiful and moving things I have ever seen. We should all be as blessed to have a love like yours. I wish you and your beautiful family all the very, VERY best. I truly hope with your beautiful nature and your family by your side that your battle is victorious!

  228. From the unmarried, non-Christian perspective of a 19 year old, you’re an inspiration & an incredible role model. The world is lucky to have you!

  229. Hello,
I am French and your video circulates on Facebook.
Bravo it is a beautiful video and one moment so moving.
Still thank you for this lesson of humility.

  230. I myself have had cancer (although a different kind) and I was directed to your blog by a friend. I applaud your video and recognise your need to show your wife that you love her and are amazed at her incredible support of you.
My husband was and is my pillar of strenght, he pulled me (and our two boys, 1 1/2 years and 5 months old at the time) through. When I tell him that he is amazing, he just shruggs and says that it was a normal thing to do: that’s what you do when you love each other. Rachel probably says the same. But you and I know how amazing it is to have someone love you that much and take care of you in your time of need. I think your video is a wonderful way of letting her now how special she is. From me to her: Rachel, you make a huge difference. You are a role model for your sons and I am in awe of you.

Kristian, I wish you all the love and hope and health you so deserve. Live life as much as you can, not because it could end, but because it is beautiful.

  231. Hello,
I am from France and I just want to say that here, at the other side of the world, people are supporting you and wish you keep your incredible strenght.
“Joyeux Anniversaire” to Rachel (even if it’s a bit late today).
Hang on, and thank you for this beautiful moment of life.

  232. Hello there,

  241. I’m an American Grandmother, have non Hodgkins Lymphoma and just finished my first round of treatments….reading your blog was like listening to myself – even to the ‘God, help!’ prayer. God is the only way we get through these treatments and days of ‘waiting’. God BLESS you and your precious family. As I am fond of saying ‘I’m in it to win it’….I do whatever they tell me to do and pray ceaselessly…..when I think of you all I will offer up a prayer for your health and family.

  242. Nice video, don’t understand why you needed a Hugh Grant or the PM of NZ in the video, wasn’t this about you and your wife?
Other than that, nice video, hope you get well soon…

  243. Rachel was my teacher at school ( Oxford Falls). I can positvley say she is the most patient women i have ever come across. Although we weren’t always the best class, we always thought she was wonderful. Infact i remember each time i saw i could have sworn she was pregnate with another baby. even if there is only two! She has a irreplaceable glow about her and the most beautiful smile. I am a girl by the way, so dont worry, im not hitting on your wife ! Best of luck to you. However i do know you will beat this, you have too much to live for.

  244. Wow you touched my heart, you brought tears to my eyes. What a wonderful way of thanking your beautiful wife. May god bless you and find a cure for your illness. With love from Wagga Wagga

  257. Dear Kristian,

Words cannot express how much your story touches and inspires me.

I cannot imagine what it must be like for you to battle your illness, but what I know is your bravey, love, dedication and attitude surpasses that of most people.

The video was fantastic. If ever there should be an epitome of how actions speak louder than words, this would rank among the top.

God’s plans are beyond our mortal comprehension. There is a bigger plan, and a reason for everything that happens. You and your family are beacons of God’s light in a dark world, and I thank you for showing that light to a backslider like myself.

You and your family will always be in my prayers and in my heart. Get well soon mate.

    God bless.

  262. Dear Kristian,
What a beautiful legacy. This brought tears to my eyes and a longing to my heart that all marriages would contain and portray this depth of love blended with the love of God above. My prayers are with you and your family, that Yeshua, Jesus Christ, by the power of His Holy Spirit, touch and heal your body while making all of you stronger in spirit and in His love. Miracles can and do happen. Keep your faith and love for each other strong. Happy belated birthday Rachel. What a beautiful family you have.

Someone who holds a really special place in my heart shared this video with me in hope of trying to get a point across. Watching this video made me realize something- “That no matter how hard you try to make it through this life on your own, it’s just so much more beautiful and worth living each moment for when you have that someone who makes it all worth it”. You have really touched me and moved me in way that I cannot describe. I’ll pray for you, your wife and those two adorable little boys! 357. HI KRISTIAN & RACHEL ANDERSON, WOW AMAZING LOVE, CURE FOR CANCER IS MMS GOOGLE IT! OR COPY AND PASTE: http://www.miraclemmineral.co.nz/
ITS ONLY $40.00 DELIVERED TO YOUR DOOR, SAFE AND IT WORKS GOD BLESS YOU BOTH AND YOUR KIDS. :)

    • I feel I need to respond to this one…. I have been repeatedly bombarded with these MMS offerings from a handful of individuals. The fact is, it is quackery. There is not one shred of quantifiable, repeatable evidence that MMS cures cancer, or anything else for that matter. To say it cures cancer is, in fact, a fraudulent claim as was evidenced by the TGA’s repsonse to MMS sales in Australia.

See http://www.mmsbuyaustralia.com.au/ for details and a retraction where they concede there is no proof of the claims made about MMS.

Also see their huge disclaimer here:

      http://www.mmsbuyaustralia.com.au/purchase-mms.html?gclid=CLvU3NL7iKQCFRW1bwoduyawHA

MMS is absolutely fraudulent… those that sell it target sick and vulnerable people. I urge anyone considering MMS to stay far away from it. It is banned in many countries for good reason.

  371. Oh my word, what an amazing birthday gift! What an incredible love! I found your blog via youtube and deeleea.com. May you both be showered with an overflow of God’s love and grace!

  372. I am 17, and so touched by this. When I think of your story and your words I feel a burning, a desire and hope. I realise If I could wish for anything in this world, it would be for you to be well again. Looking at this makes me want to scream at everything I hear at school all day – the complaining, the moaning – it makes me so angry. Your story, and your blog has the power to change the world. It seems today when we flick on the news, it is full of hate.
This is one of my favourite quotes:
“Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion’s starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don’t see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often, it’s not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it’s always there – fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know, none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge – they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I’ve got a sneaking suspicion… love actually is all around.”

It reminds me of you, because out of the pain, the sickness – there is something so beautiful – the love of your wife and family.

I only wish that one day, as I continue to learn about the world – that I can be like you – determined, faithful, and love someone with all my heart.

Thank you Kristian, I hope you get to read this – you have changed my life.
    Love Cat

  380. To say that chills have crept up the whiskers on my arm would be a complete understatement to seeing this video. My heard is touched, and in a time where your world is full of so much hurt, I am enlightened by your resilience. You are my friend, are an angel. God gave you to your family and to this world to touch others. I have no doubt in that, and you certainly have pounded on the door of my world. My prayers will forever be with you and your family.

  390. Kristian and Rachel, I saw your story on Oprah and then it was mentioned this morning by two members of our church here in Calgary, Canada – Ryan and Rebekkah Padar – who said they know you from when they lived in Australia. How cool! I just wanted you to know that we are praying for your family here in Canada and we are so excited to see God’s tremendous power as He blessed you via the Oprah show.

  391. With love anything can happen, and you have it in abundance. I hope it is OK that I’ve reposted your video on my facebook page – many people sending love to you and your family.

  392. Truly beautiful. There is simply nothing more beautiful than the expression of pure love and this man has it. She must be a wonderful and beautiful person to have this made for her. I wish only good things for you 4.

  393. wow! That is one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. Kristian, you hang in there cause those gorgeous little boys look great with your arms around them and to the gorgeous Rachael, You take comfort in knowing you must be the most beautiful kind of wife to have inspired such a video. 394. Hi Buddy, remember me…from premiere productions, i lost contact with you when you left to go east and now I have found you, I nearly choked and cried when I saw you on TV last night and I said to my self this cant be true, now my positive energy is focused on your recovery and remember my old friend Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass – it’s about learning how to dance in the rain.

    Kim.

  395. Take care brother, get well soon and God bless you and your beautiful family. What a great and very beautiful video.

  396. Let me first say what a video! It was beautiful. The $250 000 you got was well deserved. I hope you win your battle against cancer. Have a happy life with your wife and children!

  397. this is beautiful…

  398. Since the first time I saw this 10 months ago until now, this is my inspiration. No, actually, you are my inspiration; this is just one of the more obvious examples of why you are.

It’s your honest approach to life, your fighting spirit and the admission that some days you don’t feel much like fighting anymore. It’s the hope and faith and love and fear and sheer will that you have while fighting something I can’t honestly imagine that inspires me.

I think of you every day. I worry if you go a few weeks between posts, worrying that we may never hear from you again, and praying that we will.

I remember you in my prayers, and I remember Cody, Jakob, and Rachel, because while I don’t know any of you, you’ve all touched my life so deeply. I know God knows how special you all are and I look forward to the day when He answers all the prayers around the world for you.

  399. Dear Kristian,
Firstly, a thank you to you for sharing such a moving video with us all. Personally, with this one video, you have humbled me by teaching me two things. One, that there Are great men out there, who are spiritual, loving and devoted in the most perfect way to their family; and two, that one person’s positive actions can truly resonate around the world, and move people to become better Human beings. Never have so many tears flowed from so many people from such a sense of love, support, and admiration. You alone have inspired me, and moved me, in a way that no one has in a very long long time. To me you stand for dignity, strength, love, God, devotion and a quietly determined spirit. As a former nurse, who worked on a colorectal-oncology ward for over 4 years, I can say our admiration needs to also extend to your wife. So often it is the partner of the cancer patient who provides the necessary strength to see you through all the dark and frustrating days. To do it with such dignity is also a testament to Rachel’s character. Your children are blessed with two such wonderful role models. God bless.
